The plan to change the landscape of New Delhi was first started in 2015 when the DDA announced the creation of three smart cities on the outskirts of Delhi. These are Dwarka, Rohini and Narela. Dwarka Smart City is thus, a part of such an important developmental plan started by the DDA which is supposed to offer 2-2.5 million affordable houses to the people of Delhi. It also comes under the Master Plan Delhi 2021 to further enhance its importance.
This was previously called as the Dwarka L zone, but has been renamed due to the level of technology that would make it a smart city. The L zone was the biggest zone among the 15 zones that were created for the planned development of Delhi based on the Land Pooling Policy. It is the most lucrative zone in terms of residency and commercial sectors. This Dwarka Smart City is the largest of the three proposed smart cities and is expected to provide for 16-18 lac houses for the people. It has come as good news for the people around South-Delhi, as many people do their job there but have not been able to buy a house due to high prices in Delhi. The affordable pricing would help people get their dream homes in Delhi.
As per the land pooling scheme, the DDA would be responsible for constructing civic infrastructure here such as roads, sewage, water treatment plants and green space. The private builders would then be given contracts to build residential, commercial and public spaces for the people. The Dwarka Smart City would be driven by international technology so that the middle-class people get a taste of it. Various housing groups such as DLF, Omaxe, Ansal, and Tata Housing have shown great faith in this in venture initiated by the government.
